A compilation of previously unfinished songs and newly composed instrumentals recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2020 and throughout 2021, The Violet Ray references Nikola Tesla's invention once thought to possess healing capabilities, and deals with the themes of love, death, the afterlife, and what enlightenment means. Rendina recorded the 15-plus instruments himself at his home in Pasadena while building a studio. The album is unofficially subtitled The Konzert für Wuhan in reference to China's obsession with classical music, perhaps as a means to impose discipline on its subjects. Rendina struggles to maintain his neutral stance in the face of radical agendas on all sides politically, as some forgive and forget their differences, while others don't. The record seems to cover quite a bit of ground, and Rendina continues to innovate harmonically in Indian music and that of Eastern Europe and the Middle East, as well as electronically, creating shifting overtones on the Matriarch synthesizer to create the sound of The Violet Ray.
